Find it on Epic.ĭoctor Who: The Edge of Time (November 12) – A VR title for fans of the long-running sci-fi series from the UK. Rune II (November 12) – The world is ending, and the Norse gods have sent their champion to save Midgard in this action game. The former released this week while the latter comes out in early December. Romancing SaGa 3 originally came out for the SNES decades ago, whereas Ambitions was a PS Vita title. Romancing SaGa 3 (November 11) – Both Romancing SaGa 3 and SaGa Scarlet Grace: Ambitions have yet to get official Western releases on PCs… until now. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will also add new enemies such as the purge and flame troopers, as well as the Second Sister, an elusive Jedi hunter that’s out for blood. Given that it’s a third-person action-adventure game, you’ll also see a bit of platforming and dueling. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will feature cinematic recreations and battles that fans of the flicks will be fond of. As Emperor Palpatine’s Order 66 brings the Jedi to their knees, you’ll have to master the lightsaber and the Force if you want to stay alive. Set during the events of Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith, Kestis has just narrowly escaped certain death at the hands of the Galactic Empire. In Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, you take on the role of Cal Kestis. Players will also be able to choose from five unique classes such as the Elementalist or Berserker, all while commanding hundreds of troops. Kingdom Under Fire 2, the MMORTS hybrid, will feature a three-way war between the Human Alliance, Dark Legion, and Enclabossians as each faction attempts to establish dominance in the continent of Bersia. Still, we’ve yet to see how well this would be implemented. While microtransactions will be present, these are solely for cosmetics such as mounts and costumes. According to the game’s official FAQ, instead of going free-to-play, it’ll be “buy-to-play” instead. On other occasions, it was released with a free-to-play or “freemium” model.Īll of that changes this week when Kingdom Under Fire 2 finally releases for North America and Europe. At times, Kingdom Under Fire 2 was stuck in development hell. The next game in the franchise never materialized for players in various parts of the globe. I remember looking forward to the release of Kingdom Under Fire 2 back in 2009, an announcement that led nowhere. The combination of the hack-and-slash, role-playing, and strategy genres led to gameplay that I sorely missed, an itch that the Dynasty Warriors titles could hardly scratch. I still recall playing those games fondly. In the early 2000s, a couple of Kingdom Under Fire games were released for the Xbox. It might be an enjoyable addition to the game library of a long-time fan, but it’s a mere nostalgia trip that hasn’t aged well. Its user interface and unit pathfinding also needed reworks. The game’s mechanics also come from a bygone age of clickfests and micromanagement. Even with visual improvements, it was nowhere close to the looks and presentation of modern-day strategy titles. I recently reviewed Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition and, while I was thankful for all the content bundled in, the overall experience still felt sorely lacking. Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition features 4K UHD support and additional tweaks such as AI improvements (no longer needing to cheat to win), and something so simple but immensely helpful such as click-dragging military units only (no longer will you accidentally end up bringing your villagers to a fight). Every leader and campaign, every unit and historical battle - everything’s here with a shiny new coat of paint. This “remaster of a remaster” contains all the content from the last 20 years. The remaster also had several expansions.įast forward to the present and we’ve got Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. It was followed up by Age of Empires II: HD Edition which was released in 2013. Boasting numerous civilizations and leaders to play as it allowed you to have a romp through history by conquering your foes. It was lauded as a marvel of its day and one of the best strategy games of all time. Age of Empires II: Definitive EditionĪge of Empires II originally released back in 1999. Where the rest of the people are not using any other iTrace, and most of the people are not having any experience with aberrometers. If you’re using aberrometers in your clinic, what is your preferred choice of aberrometry in your clinic? Zywave, WASCA, iTrace, Nidek OPD Scan, or any other aberrometer, or you’re not having any other experience with aberrometry? Let’s wait for the answer. Other studies have stated aberrometers based on the ray tracing principle and aberrometers based on the Hartmann-Shack principle should not be interchanged in clinical applications. And they found that higher order measurements, higher order aberration measurements obtained with iTrace tended to be larger than those obtained with Shack-Hartmann aberrometers and significant differences between the devices were found in coma measurements also. Rozema did a wonderful comparison of six aberrometers, and they found that all these aberrometers have different technical specifications, but when studied in normal healthy eyes they found that most of the parameters globally were similar, but there were some parameters in which there were significant differences. iTrace is based on the principle of ray tracing. The commercially available aberrometers, which are widely used worldwide, are Nidek OPD scan, WASCA, by Carl Zeiss Meditec, Zywave by Bausch and Lomb, multispot Hartmann, and Allegretto wave analyzer. The Zernike coefficients are represented as these Zernike polynomials, and the value is expressed in microns, and these values are expressed as bars, and these are displayed in iTrace. So the first two rows include lower order aberration, vertical tilt and horizontal tilt are included in first order aberration, oblique astigmatism, defocused and vertical astigmatism are included in second order aberration, while the bottom rows of this Zernike pyramid includes higher order aberration, vertical trefoil, horizontal coma, and oblique coma are included in third order, and vertical pentafoil, vertical secondary trefoil are included in fifth order aberrations. So how do we quantify wavefront aberrations? These wavefront aberrations are represented by Zernike mode pyramid, where m is the angular meridional frequency and n is the radial order. Do you have any aberrometer in your hospital? So it will be good to teach those people who are not having so much exposure to aberrometers. Higher order aberration causes blur and double voicing, glare and halo caused by spherical aberration, and starburst aberrations are caused by trefoil. Lower order consist of myopia and astigmatism. Aberrations are mainly lower order aberrations and higher order aberrations. And any departure from this parameter leads to a wavefront error. So what is wavefront aberration? It’s a measure of aberropia, the light coming from the distance, and whenever this passes through a convex lens, a spherical wavefront is formed. In the process of image formation by the human eye, the sources of degradation are diffraction, scattering, and most common is optical aberration. And ray tracing wavefront aberrometry and corneal topography fulfill this requisite. So today we are in the era of supranormal vision, where not only the surgeon, but patients also want vision beyond 20/20, and one can tailor patients’ outcomes with advanced different technology. So we’ll have a short talk on the basics of wavefront aberrometry and screening of patients with multifocal IOL candidates, dysfunction lens syndrome, dissatisfied refractive and multifocal patients, precision in toric IOLs, and other non-surgical applications of iTrace. And second are comprehensive ophthalmologists and ophthalmic technicians, and some of you are refractive surgeons. It’s good that most of our people are fellows today evening. What is your current position? Are you a cataract surgery? Are you a refractive surgeon? Comprehensive ophthalmologist? Fellow/resident, medical student, ophthalmic technician or allied health? So let’s see who has joined us today. So during the presentation, I will have a few poll questions for you, and I will be happy to take any queries and questions at the end of the presentation. I’m having no financial interest in this presentation. Neelam Pawar from India, and tonight I will be presenting on wavefront aberrometry and iTrace, screening and planning surgeries. DR PAWAR: Welcome to Cybersight live webinar. While mortar settings are more expensive, you won’t have to worry about the bricks becoming uneven.Īnother design facet of brick patios are the placement of the bricks. Setting them in sand is cheaper but the bricks are likely to shift. If you don’t own one of these they will cost around $60 to $95 to rent one.Īn aspect of cost to pay attention to is whether to set the bricks in sand or mortar. However, you’ll want to keep in mind if you are installing these bricks yourself, you’ll probably need a brick saw. On the other hand, for a professional installation, you’ll pay around $12 to $18 per square foot. If you want to install these bricks yourself, you’ll be paying $3 to $5 per square foot. These bricks are thinner but still durable enough to handle people frequently working across your patio. The bricks used for patios aren’t the same “builder” bricks you might see in walls, though. The traditional choice is red brick but there are many other color options as well such as brown, black, tan, cream, gray, buff, and even pink. Brick Patiosīrick patios are a classic option for patios and have a rather widespread appeal. They won’t contract and crack as easily as other options during cold snaps and winter months. To end on a positive note, a great benefit of paver patios is that they aren’t as prone to weather-related problems. It’s possible to redo a paver patio if it is run over with weeds in the case that things get out of hands, though. Some people try to avoid this by using polymer sand to prevent this problem. Unlike other concrete options, paver patios don’t need time to set and if you walk across them immediately you won’t cause any damage.Īnother con of paver patios is that weeds tend to grow through them. We will take a deeper look at other types of concrete patios that you have to choose from later. These are most often installed as concrete in the form of small but various sized pieces with different colors, patterns, and textures. Patios with paver material are usually made of stones made out of concrete, clay brick, or even natural stone. You can make your patio last even longer if you use a seal for patios that is weatherproof. Finally, the patio will need to be cleaned and sealed. You’ll then want to vibrate these into place. Once the pavers are set, you’ll want to use a broom to brush sand into the gaps between them. Once the pavers are set out, PVC or metal edging needs to be used with edge spikes to be used at a measurement of at least every foot. After that, about an inch bedding sand needs to be installed and after that you can install the pavers themselves. Then, gravel must be added and then leveled. In some places, this is as deep as a foot and a half. The first step is to remove any dirt or grass down to the subsoil level. Many estimates put the installation time of 3 to 5 days for a professional team to install a paver patio.Ī big part of this is the fact that paver patios take a lot of prep work before the material itself is laid down. It should be noted that the installation of paver patios is much longer than other options. You can bring the cost down to around $2 to $8 per square foot. Typically, you’ll be paying around $12 to $22 per square foot. Paver patios are a rather low maintenance option when it comes to patio material. (It split into North Carolina and South Carolina in 1729.) As a result, slavery played an important role in the development of the Carolina colony. These Carolinians had close ties to the English planter colony on the Caribbean island of Barbados, which relied heavily on African slave labor, and many were involved in the slave trade themselves. In its southern half, planters presided over vast estates that produced corn, lumber, beef and pork, and–starting in the 1690s–rice. In its northern half, hardscrabble farmers eked out a living. The Southern Coloniesīy contrast, the Carolina colony, a territory that stretched south from Virginia to Florida and west to the Pacific Ocean, was much less cosmopolitan. As a result, Pennsylvania soon became a prosperous and relatively egalitarian place. Like their Puritan counterparts in New England, most of these emigrants paid their own way to the colonies–they were not indentured servants–and had enough money to establish themselves when they arrived. Lured by the fertile soil and the religious toleration that Penn promised, people migrated there from all over Europe. Penn’s North American holdings became the colony of “Penn’s Woods,” or Pennsylvania. In 1680, the king granted 45,000 square miles of land west of the Delaware River to William Penn, a Quaker who owned large swaths of land in Ireland. This made New York one of the most diverse and prosperous colonies in the New World. Most of the Dutch people (as well as the Belgian Flemings and Walloons, French Huguenots, Scandinavians and Germans) who were living there stayed put. The English soon absorbed Dutch New Netherland and renamed it New York. In 1664, King Charles II gave the territory between New England and Virginia, much of which was already occupied by Dutch traders and landowners called patroons, to his brother James, the Duke of York. Meanwhile, Puritans who thought that Massachusetts was too restrictive formed the colony of Rhode Island, where everyone–including Jewish people–enjoyed complete “liberty in religious concernments.” To the north of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, a handful of adventurous settlers formed the colony of New Hampshire. Puritans who thought that Massachusetts was not pious enough formed the colonies of Connecticut and New Haven (the two combined in 1665). With the help of local natives, the colonists soon got the hang of farming, fishing and hunting, and Massachusetts prospered.Īs the Massachusetts settlements expanded, they formed new colonies in New England. Ten years later, a wealthy syndicate known as the Massachusetts Bay Company sent a much larger (and more liberal) group of Puritans to establish another Massachusetts settlement. The first English emigrants to what would become the New England colonies were a small group of Puritan separatists, later called the Pilgrims, who arrived in Plymouth in 1620 to found Plymouth Colony. Maryland became known for its policy of religious toleration for all. Its landowners produced tobacco on large plantations that depended on the labor of indentured servants and (later) enslaved workers.īut unlike Virginia’s founders, Lord Baltimore was a Catholic, and he hoped that his colony would be a refuge for his persecuted coreligionists. This colony, named Maryland after the queen, was similar to Virginia in many ways. In 1632, the English crown granted about 12 million acres of land at the top of the Chesapeake Bay to Cecilius Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore. The first enslaved African arrived in Virginia in 1619. It was not until 1616, when Virginia’s settlers learned how to grow tobacco, that it seemed the colony might survive. The Jamestown colonists had a rough time of it: They were so busy looking for gold and other exportable resources that they could barely feed themselves. They reached the Chesapeake Bay in the spring of 1607 and headed about 60 miles up the James River, where they built a settlement they called Jamestown. In 1606, just a few months after James I issued its charter, the London Company sent 144 men to Virginia on three ships: the Godspeed, the Discovery and the Susan Constant. Historians still do not know what became of its inhabitants. Mysteriously, by 1590 the Roanoke colony had vanished entirely. The first English settlement in North America had actually been established some 20 years before, in 1587, when a group of colonists (91 men, 17 women and nine children) led by Sir Walter Raleigh settled on the island of Roanoke. In 1606, King James I divided the Atlantic seaboard in two, giving the southern half to the London Company (later the Virginia Company) and the northern half to the Plymouth Company.

But the operator quickly became a gendered job. Initially, telephone companies hired mostly men and boys to take calls. To connect a call, an operator at a switching office would take a request from a caller and physically plug one line into another.īell and other telephone exchanges spread throughout the Northeast. Physicians, police, banks and the post office were some of the first subscribers. It was designed to handle business communication, not social calls between local residents. The first telephone exchange took place in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1878, two years after Alexander Graham Bell patented the telephone. The FCC estimated then that 71 million calls annually were placed to 411. “411 usage is not insignificant,” the FCC said in a 2019 report. In 2021, there were fewer than 4,000 telephone operators, down from a peak of around 420,000 in the 1970s, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data.īut there are still people who call the operator and request directory help. The advance of technology like the internet and smartphones, the deregulation of the telecomms industry in the 1980s, and other factors have left human operators virtually extinct. Three decades later, a Bell company said a customer called to ask the operator if he was a mammal, “like a whale,” while a woman wanted to know how to get a squirrel out of her house, according to Goodmann. On Halloween eve in 1938, during Orson Welles’ radio broadcast of “War of the Worlds,” New Jersey residents believed martians were invading and frantically phoned the operator for information on the invasion and to connect them with loved ones before the world ended. Welgos/Getty Imagesīelieve it or not, gas station bathrooms used to be squeaky clean. “Telephone users interpreted her as an efficient way to locate any information,” wrote Emily Goodmann, an assistant professor of communication at Clarke University, in her 2019 paper on the history of telephone operators.Ī man wearing a cap and uniform mops the floor of a bathroom at a service station circa 1945. Well into the 20th century, AT&T offered weather, bus schedules, sports scores, time and date, election results and other information requests. The job came to be occupied mostly by single, middle-class White women, often known as “Hello Girls.” The Bell System, known as Ma Bell, advertised its mostly female ranks of operators as servile and attentive – “The Voice with a Smile” – to attract and maintain customers. The operator became the early face of the telephone, a human behind an emerging and complex technology. The operator was the essential link in the dominant Bell System, owned by American Telephone & Telegraph (AT&T), telecommunications network. Operator services were a selling point to customers during the late 1800s and early 1900s. On a notice on AT&T’s website, the company directs customers to find addresses and phone numbers on Google or online directories. Verizon, T-Mobile and other major carriers still offer these services for a fee. AT&T in 2021 ended operator services for wireless callers, although customers with home phone landlines can still access operators and directory help. Starting in January, AT&T customers with digital landlines won’t be able to dial 411 or 0 to reach an operator or get directory assistance.
